Photo File Compression Help Page

In order to upload your picture to the photo contest, it must be no larger than 4mb in file size. To check the file size of your picture, simply right click on the file and select PROPERTIES. The file size will be displayed in the properties window.

In order to reduce your image's file size, you must use an image editing software to compress the file below 4mb. We recommend using Photo Editor, available for download here. If you are having problems downloading the program you can click here to view the FAQ from the website. After you download and run the installation, you will be prompted with the following menu. Be sure to leave all these boxes unchecked before pressing OK.

Once the program is loaded, go to FILE, then OPEN then locate your file in the open window.

Once your picture is open, you will need to resize it by selecting EDIT then RESIZE as shown below.

You will then see the following window come up on your screen. Here you can adjust the dimensions of the image by changing the width and/or height. If you are working with a long image (width is bigger than height) you will only need to adjust the WIDTH to 800 as the height will adjust itself proportionally. If your image is tall (height is bigger than width) then you will only need to adjust the HEIGHT to 800 as the width will adjust itself proportionally as well. Please make sure that the first two dropdown menus next to the width and height are set to PIXELS before hitting OK.

Now that your image is the appropriate dimensions, you will be need to resave it, this time compressing its file size to fall below the maximum 4mb requirement. Select FILE then SAVE.

You will receive another window like the one below labeled Quality of JPG where you are asked to enter a number that will determine the picture quality and file size of your final image. This number may vary, but we suggest that you enter a value of 80.

You are done! Now your image should fall safely under 4mb and is ready to be submitted. You may safely close this window to return to the upload process page.
